Burns

With the term burn, we define the partly or whole destruction of the thickness of the skin and deeper tissues (fat, muscle, nerves, vessels, bones, etc) from thermal, chemical or electrical causes. Depending on the cause that created the malfunction, the burns are categorized as thermal (high or low temperature), chemical or electrical burns.

The burn treatment in acute phase may be conservative or surgical. That depends on the burn depth estimation, its spread, the age of the patient and his general health condition. Burns that are spread disturb the general health of the patient and need supportive measures before his situation allows the surgeon to lead him in surgery. The little patients receive a more conservative treatment, since their healing is better than the adults’. The burns in the arms are dealt immediately surgically, so as the contracture development and the dysfunction of the hand would be avoided. The electrical burns must be treated immediately surgically, within the first 24 hours for a better rehabilitation and avoiding contamination and destruction of unaffected areas.

Dealing with the post-traumatic implications of the burns is the peak of the plastic surgery. Multiple problems may derive from burns: Scars, contractures, unstable scars, malformations, face, hair or body defects, loss of important cosmetical and functional entities (ears, nose, lip, eyelids, eyebrows, etc) and according incapacities, limb joints malfunctions, collum contractures.
