What must not be operated
There is distinctiveness in the specialty of the cosmetical-plastic surgery. “Healthy” patients come to the plastic surgeon to become “healthier”. This is why the patients should be more cautious and the plastic surgeons more responsible.
The “patient” and the surgeon will have seriously in mind the relationship and the dynamic of “danger-gain”. From this process, the “patient” should be happy, and the surgeon proud.
The great publicity of the plastic surgery, the anxiety of the surgeons to obtain the biggest share of the “market”, but also the intrusion of doctors with no specialty in the field, have as result the idolization of the plastic surgery and the surgeries without indications.
A main priority of the plastic surgeons is to try to explore the objectiveness of the problem.
On the contrary, we can see “patients” misinformed, who isolate secluded cases, which are often inflated by the media, and awfully scared of a simple cosmetic operation. There are millions of cosmetical operations in the world with safe and excellent results.
What should the “patients” have in mind before they decide to have an operation? :
They should advise a plastic surgeon. There is a catalogue and you can find it either in the Plastic Surgeons Association – www.hespras.gr – either in the medical associations of the doctor’s region.
They should be interested in a known cosmetical operation (e.g. abdominalplasty, breast augmentation, blefaroplasty, buttock uplifting, etc) and should be cautious in weird terms and operations (golden fibres, etc)
They should be informed for what an operation can fix and what will leave in “return”. Will the asked operation have ramifications? Will they worth the result?
They should know the time of the post-operational course in the case of the worst implication. How difficult or easy is an implication fixed?
The patients should be self-aware: Is the reason for an cosmetical operation a personal need or an offer to a beloved person? Are they objective to their problem or do they exaggerate? They could take others’ opinion indirectly. They should visit the plastic surgeon of their choice and try to get an answer if their problem is actual, and if it can be addressed.
The proper selection of the “patients” from the plastic surgeon, as well as the proper diagnosis will bring the best results. The excellent execution of an operation on an “inappropriate patient” is a mistake, equally to that of a bad execution of an operation on an “appropriate patient”. It is an asset and an advantage of the plastic surgeon to refuse to offer their “medical” services to patients. How many of them really do so?
A main priority of the plastic surgeons is to try to explore the reason of a patient’s need for an cosmetical operation, as well as the objectiveness of the problem.
The doctors should avoid situations that implicate psychological disorders, even if there is an objective problem. There should be another attendant doctor.
The doctors should avoid cases that patients come to them driven from others.
The doctors should explore the cause and the motives of the patients. Many patients’ demands are not so “innocent” and some might have law implications.
The doctors must weigh their offer and the result with the “patient’s” expectations and always have with them pre-operational photographs. It is amazing how easily one can forget.
